Too late to Start?
"Shame I didn´t practice any physical activity in my youth, for now I´m too old to start." Quite often I listen to this kind of excuse coming from people in their fifty´s.
Only this kind of excuse or belief does not make sense anymore, for what we see is quite a promising perspective for this specific group, not only because of scientific support, but also for some fantastic stories of people who became athletes after 50.
It´s the case of a psychologist from São Paulo who decided to overcome sedentarism and overweight by changing her lifestyle after 50. She idealized to become a runner. On her first day of practice she almost threw the towel, since she could hardly run 500 lousy meters searching for information and professional help she understood that physical conditioning, even a very bad one, can be improved with adequate training to correspondent conditions. 500 meter became, soon enough, 1 Km and after a very good training program she managed to accomplish what seamed impossible: she finished the 50 Km São Silvestre race, on the main streets and Avenues of São Paulo. Do you think this is where she stopped? After that she decided to go for even longer races, marathons and before she knew it, racing had transformed the life of this sedentary woman from São Paulo, who is now full of health and joy.
Another very interesting case is the one of an extremely sedentary housewife, who noticed going around the block was already exhausting her, decided to occupy her free time with swimming lessons. After many dedicated strokes not only she changed her lifestyle, but also managed to swim around Fernando de Noronha´s island. Ask her how she felt back then and how she feels today.
Many people, struggling for some financial stability, dedicating to work, marriage, and kids, can only find some time for themselves after 50 or even later. Many invest in traveling, other with sedentary hobbies.
Now it is emerging a generation of people in their 50´s that does not want to dedicate themselves to sedentary habits to pass their time. They want more. This can be easily observed by looking at the differentiated public at gyms nowadays. There are lots of elderly citizens to whom a hobby has become taking care of their health, aggregating more life to their lives.
Due to lifestyle we can observe people in their 50´s in better health conditions and physical conditioning than youngsters in their 20´s. Our youngsters, frightened by violence, hours dedicated to video games and computer, need to know more and more about everything, bad nourishment, etc., are not enjoying good health or physical preparation, building, oput of that, a future of diseases and unhappiness.
May our old youngsters, who take a long while to perceive nothing is more important than good health and well living, be an example to all of our population who, unfortunately, insists on going against science!
