Weight lifting and the elderly
With the improvement of life expectation due to better daily habits during the past few years, senior citizens have gone from sports observer to physical activity practitioner. Amongst types of physical activity chosen, weight lifting has become a hit due to all the benefits it can bring to the elderly not only from the physical, but also from the psychological and social perspectives. In this text we are talking a little about the importance of weight lifting on a senior citizen´s life and why is it necessary I order to improve their life quality.
Try to picture an elderly in books, photos, movies... The image that usually comes to our minds is of a week person, with not much of strength to carry a bag, strength to go up stairs, strength to lift some objects, strength to support themselves when they loose their balance, etc. As you can easily notice, strength is one of the things they lack the most as the years go by for the massive muscle mass loss and sedentary life that accompanies the aging process. As goes the saying, what is not used is lost, and that´s what happens to strength and muscles. This is where weight lifting enters, as the best kind of physical activity to gain strength.
But what are the advantages of weight lifting in comparison with other physical activities?
• It manages to adapt work according to elderly physical condition, that is, it can adapt the weight to beginners, so they can start with as little as possible;
• It adjusts the amplitude of movement according to the elderly condition, observing degenerative diseases, common in senior citizens, limit their movement, which can be worked in a proper amplitude that does not cause them pain or lesions;
• It produces gain in bones and muscles masses, proliferation of the elastic conjunctive tissue on muscles, tendons, ligaments and joint capsule, making the body stronger and more resistant to lesions;
• It causes them to spend more energy, which helps in reducing their body fat percentage and weight, diminishing the charge on joints;
• Considering the bones mass, its rise is good for preventing from future osteoporosis problems, related to bone mass loss due to sedentarism;
• Recent works document that exercises with weights have characteristics which make them relatively safe for cardiopats, as long as excessive charge is not used. Basically, the difference between weight exercises aerobic exercises, from a cardiologic point of view, is that the blood pressure rises a little more in weight exercises and cardiac frequency rises a lot less. Those two aspects, combined, contribute to cardiac security: blood pressure goes up, inside safety limits, coronary flow goes up, and cardiac frequency not so high does not over charges the impulses conduction system;
• Still on heart condition, a senior citizen´s heart is used to make an abnormal effort in case they want to pick up something on the floor, hold grandchildren, etc.
To conclude, weight lifting generates a series of events that will improve, significantly, senior citizens´ life quality. If life quality can be defined as " not feeling limited when performing tasks they wish to accomplish", weight lifting improve their capacity to do everyday tasks, improving their self esteem and psychological aspects, as they feel useful to society. Above all things, they regain autonomy, becoming more independent and socially active.
