Obesity
Since when is being a bit overweight a problem?
It shouldn’t be if you are in good health and exercise regularly. A few extra pounds aren’t going to interfere in your life. But if you are well above weight, eat a lot of fatty foods and have little physical activity, then we have a problem!
It has been known for a long time that obesity is increasing and bad habits and a tendency towards a sedentary life are leading to disease and the following health problems are appearing:
- High blood pressure, resistance to insulin, high cholesterol, reduced HDL (good cholesterol) and increased LDL (bad cholesterol), triglycerides and glucose intolerance;
- Muscular, joint and bone problems caused by the excess load that the weight places on the body;
- Social problems, given that people are very critical and love to judge others by their appearance, which can often inhibit social life;
But no one gets heavy over night, right? There are various causes of obesity, including:
- Hormonal illness: untreated hormonal disease can lead to increased weight, such as hypothyroidism;
- Genetic factors: both the genetic (hereditary) factor as well as the surrounding environment of people with bad habits or few opportunities for good ones can lead to obesity;
- Nutrition: excess food intake. Sometimes we eat much more than we burn, and the extra calories are stored by the body. Guess how the body stores the extra calories? As fat. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight.
- A sedentary lifestyle: it is obvious that a lack of exercise leads to countless problems and obesity is one of them;
- Psychological: stress, disease, etc...
No one wants to be overweight. Many times habits, or other factors such as stress, and psychological and personal problems can aggravate our health. For this reason obesity should be treated by changing our daily habits. We should try to maintain a healthy diet, have regular and well oriented physical activity and periodic doctor’s exams. It’s important to have support and encouragement from the people close to us, for whom we also want good health!
